Bamboo can be identified by thick stems made of multiple joining nodes that are a light leafy green colour. These stems are often hollow but some varieties are solid. One way to check which variety you are dealing with is to take a look at the root system. A clump-forming variety spreads less quickly. You can identify these by their large root balls beneath the plant. Running varieties have long rhizomes that spread out, covering a wide area underground and spread very quickly.
Running Bamboo grows extremely aggressively and is challenging to control. If left untreated it will rapidly outcompete native vegetation, absorbing water and nutrients from other plants in a home garden or allotment. This will have a knock-on effect, reducing the biodiversity of the ecosystem in your area. Due to the speed at which it grows, it can even damage buildings, roads, and other infrastructure.
