Giant hogweed is a large herbaceous plant that typically grows up to three and a half metres tall, but can sometimes even reach as high as five metres. It has a red-green hollow stem of five to ten centimetres in diameter, typically covered in small hairs. Its leaves can be found part way up the stem, below the flowers. They are sharply divided with bristly hairs on the underside. When the giant hogweed reaches maturity it forms an umbrella-like structure made of clusters of tiny white flowers.
Giant hogweed can often be found alongside riverbanks. It digs into the soil and outcompetes other plants in the area. When it dies back in the winter, it leaves the bank exposed to erosion. The waterway becomes damaged and the local ecosystem suffers. Furthermore, the sap of the giant hogweed is toxic, causing blistering and long-term scarring in humans and severely impacting the health of native animals. If you see Giant Hogweed it is important to immediately notify the land owner due to its hazard to humans and to wildlife.
