Himalayan balsam is one of the prettier of our invasive species, sporting bright green stems and vibrant pink and white flowers in the summertime. It typically grows from just half a metre to well over two metres tall. Its leaves have a distinctive spearhead shape with serrated edges and red veins. It can typically be found along the banks of rivers, canals, lakes, ponds, and lochs across the country.
Despite its attractive appearance, Himalayan balsam is notorious along Britain’s waterways and can be the pioneer for other invasive species. The speed of its growth means it quickly shades other plants and monopolises the space. It produces an enormous amount of pollen over a long period which draws pollinators away from native flora and enables it to dominate riverbanks. However it is not frost-proof. So, when it dies off in the winter, the bank is left vulnerable to erosion.
