HOW TO IDENTIFY KNOTWEED

Knotweed is a highly invasive and fast-growing species that has unfortunately become ubiquitous across the country. It grows in tall shoots of pale green, bamboo-like stems with purple flecks. Its leaves are broad and bright green, It flowers in late summer to early autumn, but grows at its fastest during the spring.

You can usually identify the type of knotweed by examining the plant’s head and the presence of short hairs. Japanese knotweed has hairless leaves that grow up to 15 centimetres. Bohemian knotweed can reach 25 centimetres, with white hairs approximately 1mm long. Giant knotweed grows up to 40 centimetres and has brownish hairs around 0.5mm in length.

In winter, knotweed dies back significantly, making it difficult to detect. If you suspect its presence, it is important to act quickly.

What problems does knotweed cause?

Knotweed grows extremely quickly. This makes it a massive threat to local biodiversity as it can easily disrupt local ecosystems. However, when it dies back during winter months the soil in the areas it has dominated is vulnerable to erosion. This is particularly problematic along the banks of waterways like rivers, canals and ponds and can contribute to flooding by obstructing the water stream. Knotweed does not tend to cause damage by itself but can grow into cracks or voids which can compromise the structure. As a result, mortgage lenders are hesitant on providing funding on properties where knotweed is present.
