HOW TO IDENTIFY POISON HEMLOCK

Despite being famous for its toxicity, poison hemlock can be difficult to identify. A biennial plant, it forms a rosette in its first year and white umbel flowers on long stems in the summer of its second. These, and its lacy, parsley-like leaves, make it challenging to differentiate it from other species like wild carrot. You can identify poison hemlock by its hairless, hollow stems with distinctive purple-red streaks. Always thoroughly wash your hands after handling anything you suspect might be poison hemlock.

WHAT PROBLEMS DOES POISON HEMLOCK CAUSE?

Every part of this plant is highly toxic both to humans and wildlife if ingested. It contains alkaloids which cause severe vomiting and paralyse the nervous system. If untreated this can lead to respiratory failure and death. Each poison hemlock plant can produce up to 38,000 seeds during its life and each seed can then lie dormant for as long as six years before germinating. It is vital that it is properly removed to ensure all of the plant material is gone and your property is protected from potential regrowth.
