HOW TO IDENTIFY RHODODENDRON

The main invasive species of rhododendron found in the UK is Rhododendron Ponticum. It is a large woody plant with rough bark that typically reaches up to three and a half metres in height, but can grow to be over 10 metres tall. You can identify it by its dark green, oblong shaped leaves that grow in whorls around the stem. However, its most distinctive feature comes out during the summer months, when it develops bell-shaped clusters of attractive pink flowers.

WHAT PROBLEMS DOES RHODODENDRON CAUSE?

Rhododendrons commonly sold in garden centres are neither invasive nor destructive. However, Rhododendron Ponticum, introduced to the UK in the 19th century, is highly invasive and environmentally harmful. Its resilience allows it to spread rapidly, outcompeting native vegetation. Additionally, Rhododendrons are toxic, threatening local wildlife and posing risks to humans, pets, and livestock. They can block sunlight, hinder plant growth, and release toxins into the soil, contributing to disease through fungal spread. This ultimately reduces biodiversity, including vital pollinators.
